Airtel Uganda has received an ICT for Development Award for ‘Airtel Weza,’ a mobile application for savings groups developed with Grameen Foundation and Plan Uganda. The award was given by the Uganda Communications Commission at its Annual Communications Innovations Awards (ACIA) ceremony, which recgonizes ICT innovators that create practical solutions.

A little more than 18 years ago, I began my journey as the founding President and CEO of Grameen Foundation (GF). Professor Muhammad Yunus provided me with $6,000 in seed funding and enormous amounts of his time and wisdom, and of course the Grameen brand.  Since then, thousands of people and organizations joined me on this journey to contribute to the global movement to eliminate poverty.  Grameen Foundation became a daring and caring community of practical idealists that applies the values embodied by Professor Yunus and his team at the global level.

All journeys that begin at some point come to an end. I am announcing today that my time as the President and CEO of Grameen Foundation will be concluding this year.

Dorcas Wanjiru

Dorcas Wanjiru is a small-scale farmer from Banana, an area in central Kenya that is rich in agricultural production. When we arrive at her home, she is in the farm but quickly comes over and gladly welcomes us into her home.

It is a small piece of land; less than an acre. She lives here with her husband and four children and also carries out her farming activities here.

Central Kenya, like most highland regions of the country, has high population densities, which means the majority of the population lives on small pieces of land. There is not much land for farming and this has resulted in declining yields. In spite of this, the majority of the people still practice agriculture.

However, there is now a considerable shift from crop to livestock farming and more specifically to dairy farming.

"I mainly focus on dairy," Dorcas told us. "My two cows don’t require a lot of space and unlike my crops, with dairy, I am also assured of getting a little income every month from my cooperative."
