Regional Representative, West Africa
Grameen Foundation (GF) is a global leader in the microfinance movement that aims to empower the worlds poorest people to lift themselves out of poverty. Since its inception in 1997, it has established a global network of microfinance partners in 22 countries and has impacted an estimated 3.6 million lives in Asia, Africa, the Americas and the Middle East.
GFs Africa strategy focuses on addressing targeted gaps to catalyze systemic change in a select group of Sub-Saharan African countries. During 2008/2009, GF plans to provide services in the following West African countries: Angola, Benin, Cameroon, Ghana and Nigeria.
This will be a consultant position based in the Region (West Africa) and will require frequent travel within the Region and occasional trips to the United States. The Regional Representative is responsible for developing, managing and overseeing the implementation of GFs programmatic work in the Region in line with GFs mission and strategic plan. This includes supporting and coordinating the work of GFs cross-functional programs in the areas of technology, social performance, and capital markets.
The Regional Representatives will work closely with the Regional Coordinator for Sub Saharan Africa in Washington, D.C. and will coordinate with other program staff and departments within GF.
Contractor(s) Obligations:
The consultant(s) will be required to perform the following services on behalf of GF:
Ongoing relationship management with GF MFI partners including conducting needs assessment, development of project plans, monitoring progress and generally providing advisory support and maintaining regular contact with the partner institutions;
Ongoing relationship management with microfinance associations in the GF strategy countries and supporting them in sector strengthening initiatives/activities;
Ongoing relationship management with policy makers, regulators and other stakeholders as applicable;
Facilitating the delivery of GF products and services including Direct Financing, Growth Guarantees, Social Performance Management Tools, Mifos and Village Phone;
Providing Technical Assistance directly as well as facilitating the provision of TA by GF staff and/or consultants as required;
Providing support to the regional team in identifying new partners in the strategy countries identified by GF in the region;
Representing GF at microfinance related events such as seminars, conferences, trainings and working exchanges;
Staying informed on industry developments and regulatory issues;
Participating in fundraising activities for programs as necessary.
GF is seeking experienced Consultant(s) with the following expertise:
Commitment to GFs mission and the eradication of poverty on a global basis;
Knowledge of microfinance industry, best practices and familiarity with different microfinance operational methodologies;
Strong Financial Management skills including the ability to analyze financial statements and assess the internal financial reporting systems of microfinance institutions;
Self-starter with strong self-motivation and the ability to work without daily supervision;
Proven competence in building collaborative relationships with a variety of stakeholders;
Demonstrated maturity with excellent interpersonal and inter-cultural communication skills;
Outstanding coordination and time management skills, with ability to handle multiple activities concurrently, under pressure, and to tight deadlines;
Fluency in spoken and written English required, French required;
Willingness to travel extensively is essential;
Computer proficiency, especially in Outlook, Power Point, Word and Excel.
Education and Experience:
Minimum seven years of work experience with an MFI, microfinance association, or as a consultant/trainer to the microfinance sector, some banking experience, an asset;
Education background in economics, business administration, or international development; Masters Degree preferred.
