Accountant

Reports to: Manager of Finance and Administration
Based: Dubai office
Position is for Grameen-Jameel Pan-Arab Microfinance Limited

Grameen-Jameel Pan-Arab Microfinance Limited is a social business jointly owned by Grameen Foundation and Abdul Latif Jameel Group. The company’s core objective is poverty alleviation in the Arab world through microfinance. Grameen-Jameel’s vision is to reach one million new active microfinance clients in the Arab world by 2011. In order to achieve this, the company forms strategic partnerships with microfinance institutions (MFIs) throughout the region who share its values: commitment to reaching women and the poorest; aggressive growth plans; and financial sustainability. Grameen-Jameel supports its Partners by delivering a suite of customized products and services, and provides financing through its $50 million Grameen-Jameel Guarantee Fund. ALJ has a very active community services program with emphasis on education, training and development.

Job Description:
Under direction of the Manager of Finance and Administration, the Accountant performs professional accounting work including accurate recording of all financial transactions, auditing, and preparation of financial and statistical reports. The Accountant also assists in the preparation of quarterly and annual budgets and budget variance reports. The Accountant may also provide cost accounting support on various projects. Further, the Accountant also assists in office administration and logistics, particularly in the absence of the Manager of Finance and Administration


Essential Job Functions:
• Budgeting:
o Assist in preparation of budgets and monitor actual performance against budget forecast;
o Prepare budget and variance reports on a monthly, quarterly and annual basis;
o Ensure compliance with Board policies and procedures;
o Keep supervisor informed about any major budgeting issues and how operational changes will impact the budget;
• Accounting:
o Prepare journal entries and reconcile general ledger on a timely basis;
o Analyze and reconcile revenue and expenditure accounts;
o Manage accounts payable and receivable
o Initiate wire transfers and journal funding transfers and reconcile monthly bank statement;
o Manage payroll function;
o Maintain fixed asset/inventory system;
o Produce of accurate financial reports on monthly, quarterly and annual basis including balance sheet, cash flow statements/forecasts, income statements and retained earning statement in accordance with accounting principals;
o Prepare audit schedules for external auditors and act as a liaison between the organization and auditors;
o Respond to accounting inquiries in a timely fashion;
o Maintain appropriate level of knowledge of legal accounting requirements and ensure compliance;
• Develop, implement, maintain and document financial and accounting systems;
• Report activities and challenges to supervisor on regular basis;
• Administration and logistics support
• Other duties as required.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Fluency in English;
• Ability to organizing own work, setting priorities and meeting critical deadlines;
• Detail-oriented professional with strong analytical & problem solving skills;
• Excellent interpersonal and inter-cultural communication skills; ability to work in a team environment;
• Experience in developing and implementing accounting systems, policies and procedures;
• Strong working knowledge and ability to quickly learn new accounting software;
• Commitment to eradication of poverty in the Arab world.

Education and Experience:
• Degree in Accounting, CPA license preferred;
• Working knowledge of generally accepting accounting principals and practices, cost accounting, budgeting, auditing and fiscal management;
• Knowledge and ability to research applicable laws, codes and regulations;
• Three or more years of work experience in accounting preferably in a start-up environment.
