Technical Program Manager, Mifos
The Technical Program Manager, Mifos will be driving key functional and infrastructure areas in the Mifos platform. This position is critical to the success of Mifos and will ensure that both the functionality and the underlying infrastructure for Mifos are rock solid. The ideal candidate will have experience shipping highly technical software, a passion for delivering tangible, customer-focused results, experience working in the developing world, and exposure to open source software efforts. The Technical Program Manager will own specific functional areas and will also drive infrastructure enhancements to support development activities. S/he will work closely with the software development teams, as well as with external partners developing for or deploying Mifos.
Reporting and Relationships: This position reports to the lead Technical Program Manager.
Availability:
The Technical Program Manager will be expected to work a typical work week of 37.5 hours plus additional hours as necessary to get the job done. The position will require international travel 4-6 times/year for 2-3 weeks at a time. Some domestic travel also required.
Essential Job Functions:
• Own and drive key functionality into the Mifos product; collect customer requirements, develop functional specifications, and work with software developers to get the right functionality into the product.
• Support Mifos Specialists—local IT consultants deploying Mifos at microfinance institutions—by providing project management and scheduling support, technical guidance, and trouble-shooting support; help to document technical issues experienced in the field and drive those issues to resolution; some onsite work in developing countries will be required.
• Collect learnings from deployments and ensure that best practices are shared within the Mifos community.
• Develop and represent core functional expertise in the highly technical areas of the Mifos platform(such as security, deployment tools, reporting, accounting interfaces, system administration tools, etc.).
• Foster Mifos community discussions related to Mifos functionality.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Demonstrated experience managing projects with multiple stake-holders, driving issues to resolution and shipping products; passion for delivering tangible results; able to juggle multiple priorities. Experience working with remote development teams a plus.
• Strong technical skills, solid understanding of SQL, ability to read and understand data models and relational databases, and familiarity with web technologies. Passion for trouble shooting technical issues a must.
• Experience with open source software development, agile development methodologies and test-driven development preferred projects preferred; willingness to learn and utilize these methodologies required.
• Passion for the mission of Grameen Foundation and microfinance.
• Experience with accounting systems, data migration, microfinance operations highly desired.
• System administration experience, including experience managing back-ups, determining security set-up, creating scripts for application monitoring, highly desired.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to work closely with both technical and non-technical peers and ability to effectively communicate with end users, business decision makers, and software developers.
• Fluency in English required.
• Previous experience working and living in the developing world a plus.
Education and experience:
• Bachelor’s degree required. An advanced degree may be substituted for work experience.
• A minimum of five years progressive and relevant experience.
Physical and Environmental Conditions:
This position does not require unusual demands for physical effort. This position may occasionally require physical effort to lift and transport boxes weighing no more than 50 pounds.
Work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts that require normal safety precautions typical of places such as offices, meeting or training rooms, residences, or commercial vehicles; e.g., use of safe work place practices with office equipment, and/or avoidance of trips and falls, and observance of fire regulations and traffic signals.
