Region:  Dangme West District, Ghana

Eligibility of Bidders: Grameen Foundation seeks the assistance of a researcher to undertake a multi-faceted research project.  This researcher should have skills and a proven track record in conducting ethnographic research as well as expertise in the application of information and communication technology for development.   Prior relevant experience/work in Ghana and/or in healthcare is preferred.

Expression of Interest: Eligible researchers are invited to indicate their interest and qualifications in providing services for an ethnographic study by submitting an initial proposal.  Select candidates will be invited to submit more detailed proposals.  More detailed information is attached in the Terms of Reference.

Overview of Research: The objective of this study is to acquire a deep understanding of Dangme West community health workers and the populations they serve.  Research will focus on but not be limited to maternal, neonatal and child health services.  Findings will feed into needs assessment research and inform Grameen Technology Center’s creation and deployment of mobile phone applications to increase health outcomes in the district.

The final deliverables will be:
•    An overview of the activities, information usage and lifestyles of representative community health workers and community members;
•    An overview of maternal, neonatal and child health services provided in the district;
•    An overview of mobile phone prevalence and usage in the district;
•    Recommendations regarding potential mobile applications that Grameen Technology Center can develop to increase health outcomes in the district; and
•    A final report which unites the outcomes of the aforementioned deliverables and includes a general methodology which can assist Grameen Foundation in undertaking similar studies in locales where future Grameen Technology Center projects will operate.

Timeline and Necessary Skills: Interested researchers must submit a cover letter, resume/CV, and an initial proposal outlining an approach for conducting this research. More details can be found in the Terms of Reference under Proposal Guidelines. Grameen Technology Center will review materials and solicit detailed proposals from select candidates.  Selections will be evaluated based on several factors, including:

•    The experience and training of the researcher(s);
•    The relevance of previous research projects;
•    The rigor and creativity of proposed research approach;
•    Experience with information and communication technologies for development;
•    Knowledge of microfinance methodologies; and
•    The timing and cost of research.

It is expected that the first four deliverables will be completed within 3 months from the date of the contract agreement.

Please send your materials to applab@grameenfoundation.org by December 8th, 2008. Include in the subject line: “Research Applicant”.
