Your gift opens the future for a poor child.
One in five children around the world- 100 to 125 million children worldwide- are not enrolled in primary school.
In many countries, public education requires families to pay fees for books, tuition, school uniforms, and other expenses. The Grameen Foundation Educational Scholarship Program covers these fees so rural and poor children of microfinance borrowers can attend school and have a chance to break out of the cycle of poverty. These children may otherwise be forced to discontinue studies due to extreme financial hardship. Studies show a strong correlation between education and economic growth in developing countries.
Your support helps send more children to school.
You educational support gives children more opportunities to advance towards an enhanced life and the chance to end the cycle of poverty. Success in this initiative will help us continue to expand our support to more microfinance institutions partners in our network.
How does it work?
The program promote education for rural, financially disadvantaged girls and boys in Bangladesh. The current cost of sending children to public schools in Bangladesh range from $1,500 per student over the five years. Your $1,500 contribution will be deposited into a local bank account for five years. Every year 12% of the interest generated is distributed equally on a monthly basis to a child to support him/ her through their primary and secondary education. The principal amount of the deposit is used as microfinance loans. This program has the dual effect of using a donation to support education and microfinance at the same time.
Grameen Shikkha, the organization that developed this innovative approach in Bangladesh has provided more than 600 scholarships to educate primary school going children to university level students with support from Grameen Foundation and others. We are currently seeking to raise $100,000 toward this initiative which will fund all school-related expenses over five years for more than 200 poor children.
