Education Scholarship Program

Bengali Children
The scholarship fund benefits children who would otherwise be unable to attend public school. Meet some of the students

Thanks to a scholarship, 14-year-old Choiti Halder will be able to continue her studies. Choiti is from a very poor and rural area of Bangladesh. Her father is a fisherman and her mother is a Grameen Bank borrower.                                Read stories of other scholarship recipients.

Your gift opens the future for a poor child.

One in five children around the world- 100 to 125 million children worldwide- are not enrolled in primary school.

In many countries, public education requires families to pay fees for books, tuition, school uniforms, and other expenses. The Grameen Foundation Education Scholarship Program covers these fees so rural and poor children of microfinance borrowers can attend school and have a chance to break out of the cycle of poverty. These children may otherwise be forced to discontinue studies due to extreme financial hardship. Studies show a strong correlation between education and economic growth in developing countries.

Your support helps send more children to school.
Your educational support gives children more opportunities to advance towards an enhanced life and the chance to end the cycle of poverty. Success in this initiative will help us continue to expand our support to more microfinance institutions partners in our network.

How does it work?
Each $1,500 contribution will be deposited into a local bank account for five years. Every year the 6% interest generated is distributed equally on a monthly basis to support a child's education. The principal amount of the deposit is used as microfinance loans. This program has the dual effect of using a donation to support education and microfinance at the same time.

Grameen Shikkha, the organization that developed this innovative approach in Bangladesh has provided more than 1200 scholarships to educate school children with support from Grameen Foundation and others.

We are currently seeking to raise $100,000 toward this initiative which will fund all school-related expenses over five years for 66 poor children in Bangladesh and other countries in our network.
