With a loan of $100, a poor woman could rebuild her business and give her children a brighter future. When a tsunami destroyed her business in Indonesia, Mrs. Nasriyah did not give up. She was grateful that her husband and five children had survived, but without her food stall, she did not have income to feed them. Mrs. Nasriyah heard about Grameen Foundation’s partner in Indonesia YKBS. She asked the microfinance institution to visit her village and provide loans. They did, with 30 women clamoring to be the first clients. Mrs. Nasriyah used a $100 loan to replace the cooking equipment she had lost in the tsunami. She now cooks more food in less time. She’s seen a large jump in her profits, which means fewer grueling hours on her feet and more time with her children. Now Mrs. Nasriyah is excited about opening a second store, this one in front of her home. Her greatest hope is to send all five of her children to school.
