With a loan of $50, a woman could buy thread & fabric for her embroidery business and send her children to school.
Antonia Diaz Hernandez lives in Chiapas, Mexico’s poorest state. She and her husband, a farm laborer, struggled to feed their children before she received her first loan from Al Sol, a local microfinance institution and Grameen Foundation partner. Antonia is a talented weaver, but was held back by extreme poverty. A loan helped her buy more thread and fabric for her business. Now Antonia’s skill has flourished. She creates beautiful embroidered blouses, pillow covers, and purses. Her success has allowed her to buy shoes for her whole family and send her ten children to school.
