| Jayashree's rickshaw has helped her family nearly triple their income. |
Donated funds go into our unrestricted fund, The Sams Fund, to support Grameen Foundation and microfinance and technology programs in developing countries to improve the lives of the poor.
With a microloan of $550, a woman could buy a rickshaw and other assets to launch several businesses.
When Jayashree was a child, her family’s poverty got so severe that she had to drop out of school and go to work at a garment factory. She toiled throughout her childhood and after she got married, her meager earnings had to support her ailing in-laws. Small loans totaling $550 saved Jayashree from a life of extreme poverty. She bought a rickshaw for her husband to drive as a taxi and a sewing machine to start her own business. She sews bags and garments to sell. Her family’s income has almost tripled since getting the loans, and she has been able to send her oldest son to college. He dreams of becoming a doctor and says that thanks to his mom’s businesses, the family now has their own home to live in and food to eat.
