| You can help provide what is often the first phone in rural communities. |
For many rural communities, walking to town or using unreliable phone service is still the principal means of communication. You
can help make sure that communication reaches those who need it. Your gift is the cost of implementing the Village Phone program
in a country and thereby connecting villages to the world. The program provides borrowers with a microloan to buy a cell
phone and other materials. The borrowers become “Village Phone Operators” who collect fees from fellow villagers to use their
cell phones. Village Phone provides what is often the first phone in a community, and the savings to villages are tremendous.
Productive family members no longer need to walk miles to get information. With $75,000, the Grameen Technology Center works to launch the Village Phone program in a new country by negotiating agreements between a microfinance institution and the local telecommunications provider.
