A visit to meet borrowers like Lina, from the Philippines, who have risen against all odds to achieve her goals, is a life-changing experience. She was once a factory worker who got laid
off in the wake of an earthquake that destroyed her workplace. Lina then started her own sweater manufacturing business with a loan of PhP 5,000 (USD $117) from GF partner TSPI, and
she currently employs 45 workers who produce dozens of quality knit garments each week. Lina is now financially secure and is even able to give back to her community; she recently donated
wood to help with the construction of a new local schoolhouse, and is proud of her ability to contribute.
Meeting women like Lina and seeing how her local microfinance institution works to serve
her and hundreds like her provides invaluable insight for best practices for the staff of other
microfinance institutions. Your gift is the cost for staff of a local microfinance institution to
make a field visit to another microfinance institution where they meet inspiring borrowers and
learn firsthand how another MFI has solved common problems, such as rising competition in
microfinance, the challenges of a rural geography, and increasing costs.
