Grameen Foundation : Get involved : What Friends are Saying : Andrew's Story
Andrew's Story
The most recent London Marathon was more than just Andrew Dorgan’s first marathon. It was his contribution to Grameen Foundation, too. Andrew had long been an avid runner, having completed two half-marathons in the past. So, when he decided to take on his first marathon, he turned it into a challenge to his family and friends, too, by making it a fundraiser for Grameen Foundation (GF).
Andrew first learned about GF from his co-worker at HSBC, the international banking giant. She leant him “Banker to the Poor,” the autobiography of Muhammad Yunus, founder of the Grameen Bank. Andrew was intrigued to learn about a model that impacted poverty, yet was so simple. His friends and family were equally amazed by the Grameen story and at the high repayment rates of the microloans.
Race day was April 13, ‘08 and Andrew called it "a thrill to see London from a new perspective," with thousands of spectators lining the course to cheer the runners, and ultimately crossing the finish line in front of Buckingham Palace. Andrew finished the marathon in 4 hours, 50 minutes and raised nearly $800 for Grameen Foundation’s work.
