Grameen Foundation : Get involved : What Friends are Saying : Barbara's Story
Barbara Parkins' Story

"As the President of the ProAction Foundation in Pleasanton, California, I’m always on the lookout for charities that promote innovative ways to support community development. ProAction Foundation is a community outreach organization with over 250 members and volunteers from ADP’s ProBusiness Division. Every November, we organize a Holiday Bazaar and invite our employees to purchase jewelry, crafts, and clothing produced by local small business owners. I recommended that our foundation donate the proceeds of its 2006 Holiday Bazaar to the Grameen Foundation after seeing a T.V. interview of their founding board member and 2006 Nobel Peace Prize recipient Muhammad Yunus. The connection between the local businesses that we promote through our Holiday Bazaar and the poor entrepreneurs around the world supported by Grameen Foundation and its local partners made our partnership a natural fit.
The story of microfinance and the borrowers it helps inspired ProAction Foundation to get behind the microfinance movement and become part of the solution. The Grameen Foundation’s work to expand access to microfinance is incredibly efficient and addresses the root causes of poverty. Just a small amount of money creates tangible benefits for an entire family through increased access to health care, education, and basic nutrition. ProAction is pleased to support Grameen Foundation’s effort to combat global poverty and create lasting peace."
