Improv Comedy Actors Raise Awareness for Microfinance

Grameen Foundation (GF) supporter Kevin Gormley organized a “Laugh and Learn Comedy Night” to spread the word about microfinance while combining it with his hobby of improv comedy.
The evening was held at the Comedy Spot, an improv comedy theater in Arlington, Virginia. Kevin kicked off the night by introducing Alex Counts, president of Grameen Foundation. Alex related a few stories including how Dr. Muhammad Yunus, GF board member and winner of the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize, was impressed by cell phone micro-entrepreneurs who had quickly learned their trade.
Next, Kevin and other actors from Comedy Sportz entertained the audience with an improv comedy performance. The evening ended with a reception featuring Bangladeshi food from a local restaurant. At the reception, Grameen Foundation staff mingled with the audience as they sampled Bangladeshi food and answered questions about microfinance. Grameen Foundation newsletters and other materials were distributed so that people could learn more.
Over 100 people attended the event, spanning all ages from the young to the young at heart. All proceeds from the event went toward the Grameen Foundation, raising a total of $1000 by the evening’s end. Liz Demery, owner of the Comedy Spot, said that she was “happy to help a good cause” and was impressed by the turnout.
