Realizing the Potential of Microfinance in China
During the recent China Microfinance Summit (see box on page 5), Grameen Foundation USA (GFUSA) President Alex Counts and Lynn Chia, Vice-Chair of a newly formed GFUSA committee on China and an Associate with Booz Allen Hamilton, presented a paper entitled “Microfinance Regulation and the Chinese Context: An Opportunity for Making a Major Impact on Reducing Poverty.” The article (a condensed version of which appears below) outlines steps for overcoming barriers to significant poverty reduction through microfinance in China.

Pascuala and Veronica
In October 2003, Grameen Foundation USA (GFUSA) Development Committee member Lucy Billingsley led a group of 30 women from Dallas to Chiapas, Mexico, to meet the borrowers of Alternativa Solidaria (AlSol), a GFUSA partner program. Joining this delegation was Randi Nordeen, GFUSA’s newly appointed Director of Development. Randi served previously as the Director of Development at Sojourners, a faith-based social justice advocacy group, and brings more than a decade of development experience to her position. Below, Randi shares her encounter with Pascuala, a single mother who has rebuilt her life and given her children a future with the help of microloans from AlSol.

Making Connections, Sharing Knowledge
By facilitating exchange trips and knowledge-sharing among its network of microfinance institutions (MFIs),Grameen Foundation USA (GFUSA) is able to leverage the years of practical experience of leading institutions like the Grameen Bank, as well as its own investments in more established programs. This enables Grameen-based institutions around the world to undertake growth with speed and efficiency and to reach greater numbers of poor faster than ever. The article below describes two recent GFUSA-facilitated exchange trips.
