Senegal

Senegal, which is located in west Africa, has a population of more than 11 million, about 70 percent of whom live in rural areas. It faces a difficult battle against poverty. 

• More than 50 percent of Senegal's men, and 70 percent of its women, over 15 years old are illiterate
• Per capita income is US$840 per year
• 51 percent of its population remains in poverty, particularly in rural areas
