Grameen Foundation : What we do : Microfinance Support : Social Performance : The PPI in action
The Progress out of Poverty Index in Action
Since 2005, Grameen Foundation, the
Consultative Group to Assist the Poor (CGAP) and the
Ford Foundation have been piloting the Progress out of Poverty Index in Latin America and Asia. To date, 19 PPIs have been developed. Of these, Grameen Foundation has supported the development of nine (in Bangladesh, Bolivia, Haiti, India, Mexico, Morocco, Pakistan, Peru and the Philippines). CGAP has commissioned the development of ten. Currently Grameen Foundation is in the process of developing or updating 36 additional PPIs.
Once a PPI is built for a market, it is intended for public use and Grameen Foundation makes it available to all who wish to use it. Our collaboration with other key stakeholders within the microfinance industry will ensure that the PPI is available for the greatest number of MFIs that wish to better meet the needs of the poorest members of the communities they serve.
Grameen Foundation is also working with USAID as it develops its legislatively-required poverty measurement tools. Several of these tools were developed by USAID in consultation with Grameen Foundation. There is a growing interest in the microfinance industry for cost-effective poverty assessment tools. Grameen Foundation is committed to working with our partners and other key industry stakeholders to develop tools and consensus for social performance management. In addition to CGAP and the Ford Foundation, the following institutions and people support the social performance work conducted by Grameen Foundation:
- Jonathan Morduch
- Imp-Act
- Freedom from Hunger
- Microcredit Summit
- RESULTS
- Grameen Foundation microfinance partners NWTF, CARD, CCT and TSPI in the Philippines; Al Sol in Mexico; Kashf and UPAP in Pakistan; Grameen Koota in India; FONDEP and Zakoura in Morocco; Pro Mujer in Bolivia and Peru; and Fonkoze in Haiti.
