Grameen Foundation : Where we work : East and Southeast Asia
East and Southeast Asia
Grameen Foundation began working with microfinance institutions (MFIs) in East and Southeast Asia in 2000. We now work in China, East Timor, Indonesia, and the Philippines -- countries and microfinance markets that have incredibly varied environments. Approximately 245 million people in the region subsist on less than $1 a day.
- China is a large market, yet the microfinance industry there is very small. We work with MFIs and the sector to alleviate constraints to successful growth.
- The microfinance industry in the Philippines is quite mature. We provide our partners more sophisticated financing vehicles along with capacity building tools such as treasury management, MIS automation, and social performance management.
- East Timor is still rebuilding in a post-conflict environment. We work to help our partner in this country to both survive and plan for a bright future.
- Our work in Indonesia is primarily focused on helping the survivors of the December 2004 tsunami by developing microfinance services in Banda Aceh.
