MKEJ is a Grameen Bank replication program based in East Java, Indonesia. MKEJ was founded by Dr. Djumilah Zain, a professor and Dean at the Brawijaya Unversity in Malang, East Java. MKEJ began in 1993 as a university-based action/research project. Now MKEJ is a full-fledged NGO or Yayasan (foundation) with a head office in Malang and operations in nearby towns of East Java, Central Java and the Moyo and Near Islands (MNI).
MKEJ’s mission is to be a leading institution in the Grameen Bank approach of providing soft loans for poor households in Indonesia while achieving a high level of growth and sustainability.
Grameen Foundation support:
MKEJ has been a partner of Grameen Foundation since 2002. Grameen Foundation has provided $92,115 in funding since December 2003 to open and operate a branch in the Moyo and Near Islands (MNI), small remote islands north of the larger Indonesian island of Sumbawa.
