Borrower Becomes Lender, Helps Others
Adela Hualuque, El Alto Branch Office - ProMujer Bolivia
In 1990, Adela came to ProMujer for a loan to expand her business of selling textiles and children’s clothing. As she become more involved with ProMujer, Adela began voluntarily recruiting new clients and forming communal associations in addition to running her business. Due to her hard work and voluntary contributions to ProMujer, Adela received a small stipend in 1991 to head special projects for the organization She was so successful that in 1994, she was asked to formally join the staff of ProMujer as a credit officer.
Adela accepted the invitation, letting her sister take over her textile business. She has since been promoted to a supervisory post in the regional office of El Alto, where she regularly visits focal centers—central meeting houses where clients come to make payments and receive health and other services—and supervises their operations. Adela commented that ProMujer has had a huge impact on her life, and not just economically. She said that through her involvement with ProMujer, she has gained self-confidence and broken through the isolation that so often characterizes poverty. “Before I was very timid and didn’t talk to people, now I interact with people all the time.”
