Established in 1999 on the northern coast of Honduras, the Adelante Foundation’s mission is to improve the standard of living of the poorest women and their families in rural Honduras. With loans starting at $50, women start and grow small businesses. In addition to helping the rural poor and their children, Adelante hopes that its work provides economic incentives for the poor to stay in rural areas rather than migrate to the vast and growing urban slums. Adelante distributed its first loans to a group of five women on September 14, 1999. In the summer of 2000, Adelante began formally partnering with Grameen Foundation, which has been its most significant source of training, technical assistance and financing.
Outreach:
With technical and financial support from Grameen Foundation, Adelante has reached 5,291 clients in rural Honduras as of December 2007. In addition to microfinance services, Adelante provides its clients with courses in business principles and life skills – taught in conjunction with a local family planning and AIDS education agency.
Grameen Foundation support:
Adelante, which developed its methodology after Grameen Foundation sponsored its founders to travel to Bangladesh for training in 2000, is strengthening its operations with the support of Grameen Foundation technical advisors. This includes support in implementing an automated management information system. In 2004, we conducted an audit to assess Adelante’s operational efficiency and technical needs and advise them on necessary steps to improve their performance. In addition, we also assisted in automating their management information system.
