Al Karama promotes the socioeconomic development and integration of marginalized populations by providing financial services to low income people. Established in 1999 and headquartered in Oujda, Al Karama targets the poorest regions of eastern Morocco. It became a Grameen-Jameel Initiative partner in 2006. In 2005, with support from the Grameen-Jameel Initiative Al Karama organized and hosted Morocco’s first forum for microfinance organizations and policy-makers to discuss the importance of expanding services to the poor in the neglected Eastern region of the country.
Outreach:
Al Karama’s currently has over 12,000 active clients and plans to reach 47,000 clients by 2010.
Grameen Foundation support:
Grameen-Jameel Initiative has supported Al Karama with a loan of $100,000 to provide loans to an expanded number of borrowers.
