The Foundation for Local Development and Partnership, FONDEP, was established in Morocco in 1996 as a nonprofit organization or (NGO). The mission of FONDEP MicroCrédit is to make credit available to poor people, specifically women. FONDEP’s priority is to use microcredit to help poor women create their own microentreprises and generate income. Products include loans to solidarity groups and individuals.

Outreach:

Reaching over 80,000 clients as of the end of March 2007, up from 15,000 clients in 2003, its loan portfolio has increased from an annual total of $1.5 million in 2003 to approximately $27.5 million as of March 2007. FONDEP is currently striving to serve 229,323 clients by the end of 2010.

Some of the challenges FONDEP faces are providing credit for the poorest people in the most rural areas while also maintaining portfolio quality, developing financial products to meet the needs of rural clients and mobilizing more funds to satisfy the demand.

Grameen Foundation support:

To date, the Grameen-Jameel Initiative has given FONDEP $240,000 in loans and a training grant of $20,000.
