As a non profit international NGO founded in 1990 and providing microcredit since 1995, enda-ia is the first institution in Tunisia following internationally recognised microfinance best practices.
ENDA-ia targets people (82% female) in disadvantaged communities in urban and rural areas of Tunisia, from 40 branches.
ENDA-ia reached financial self sufficiency in 2003 becoming a sustainable financial institution. In 2005, it began contracting commercial loans to increase the capital needed to expand it activities.
ENDA-ia is the founding member of Sanabel, the Microfinance Network of Arab Countries that seeks to promote microfinance in the region. In 2006, it became a member of MFN, the Microfinance Network and of MAIN, the African network.
Outreach:
ENDA-ia aims to serve 180,000 clients from 100 branches with a portfolio of over $ 86 million by 2010.
Grameen Foundation support:
ENDA-ia formed a relationship with the Grameen-Jameel Initiative in June 2003. A board member was given a scholarship for an intensive training seminar organized by the Grameen Bank in Bangladesh, and staff has received scholarships from the Initiative for training opportunities in the region. In 2006, Enda-ia received a local currency loan of $750,000 backed by a $375,000 guarantee by the Initiative through the Grameen Foundation Growth Guarantee product. This transaction – partnering a local bank and a local microfinance institution with only a partial guarantee – broke new ground for the microfinance sector in Tunisia and in the region.
Awards:
• Dubai International Award for microfinance best practices (2006)
• President’s Award for promoting the family (2005)
• AGFUND granted enda its first category Award for international & regional projects in the field of microcredit contributing to the Millenium Development Goals (2005)
