Yemen Women’s Union – Abyan Governorate (Abyan) began its lending operations in October 2003, and joined Grameen-Jameel in February 2007. Abyan works in five districts in the Abyan governorate of Yemen, which is located in the south near Aden port. The population of the governorate is about 700,000, and it is largely inhabited by the Bedouin.
Outreach:
All of Abyan’s clients are women, and it makes exclusive use of a group lending methodology. In addition, almost 100% of Abyan’s staff is women, including its director.
Grameen Foundation support:
Abyan will use the capital from the $100,000 loan provided by Grameen Foundation with funding from the Mosaic Foundation to expand outreach. Abyan participated in a SEEP Training Workshop ran by Grameen-Jameel in June 2007. Grameen-Jameel also led a Business Planning Workshop in June 2007 that will generate a complete business plan by September..
