ESAF is a registered charitable society located in Kerala in southern India. Its 55 branches extend into four other states: Maharashtra, Gujarat, Jharkhand, and Chattisgarh. In addition to microfinance, they provide a range of services to members including skills-building, business development services, and market linkages.

After the 2004 tsunami, three branches were opened: one in Alleppey (Kerala state), and two in Kanyakumari (Tamil Nadu state). A central office has also been established in Kanyakumari to oversee the three branches. Between December 2004 and March 2005, ESAF engaged in relief work. They then transitioned into livelihood restoration, providing boats, catamarans, and house repair and construction. In the fall of 2005, ESAF’s tsunami programs transitioned again into providing microfinance in the affected areas.

Outreach:

As of December 2007, ESAF was serving 15,713,317 clients. Because of their expansion in response to the 2004 tsunami, as of June 2006, ESAF was serving 3,127 tsunami affected clients.

Grameen Foundation support:

Grameen Foundation began working with ESAF following the 2004 tsunami and has provided $145,000 in funding for onlending and operating expenses related to their expansion into tsunami affected areas.
