Founded in 2006 by two experienced microfinance professionals, Sonata Microfinance Private Limited is headquartered in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh, India. Sonata’s mission is to “identify and motivate poor women in a cost-effective way and deliver them microfinance services in an honest, timely, and efficient manner.” Its goals focus on connecting poor women with financial resources, scaling up the organization, and providing attractive returns for investors.

For over 40,000 clients in the states of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, India, Sonata provides income-generating loans, emergency loans, insurance, and savings. Through its experienced leadership, Sonata utilizes a variety of best practices and assessment methodologies to have an positive societal impact. Following the Grameen model, Sonata employs a group lending approach for its rural, semi-urban, and urban clients.

Outreach:

Sonata has grown from serving 6,971 clients in 2006 to serving over 40,000 clients as of March 2008. In April 2007, Sonata acquired the microfinance operations and staff of Jeevika Livelihoods Support Organization, expanding outreach to Central India in the state of Madhya Pradesh. Since its inception, Sonata has disbursed more than USD$5,558,264 in loans, and plans to reach out to approximately 200,000 clients by 2011.

Grameen Foundation is supporting Sonata to continue adopting best practices and facilitated interaction with peer institutions from all over the world at a partner conference in Bolivia in 2007. Looking forward, Grameen Foundation will help them achieve their goals and mission of poverty alleviation through a mix of financial and technical assistance focused on obtaining low cost, large-scale funding required for their growth and developing strong internal systems to manage rapid growth effectively.
