The Urban Poverty Alleviation Program (UPAP) was launched in June 1996 by the National Rural Support Program (NRSP) in the urban areas of Rawalpindi and Islamabad. The objective of the program was to develop an indigenous model to improve the quality of life of low-income people in the urban areas of Pakistan. The program was specifically aimed at enhancing the credit flow to women in urban areas to improve their access to self-employment opportunities.

Over the years, UPAP has developed its own unique lending methodology to suit local context and to allow faster growth of the organization. It provides loans for income-generation activities only, and targets poor women for providing its services.

UPAP is headquartered in Islamabad, and has operations in five urban districts of Pakistan including Faisalabad, Karachi, Multan and Lahore.

Outreach:

UPAP has gone from serving 106 clients in 1997, to supporting 92,455 clients as of March 2008.

Grameen Foundation support:

Grameen Foundation made its first loan to UPAP in 2006 for expansion of its operations into new areas. Grameen Foundation has provided $95,000 in long-term loans to establish a new office which will have the capacity to serve 10,000 clients. In addition, Grameen Foundation is providing support for senior management capacity building.
