Established in 1998, the Specialized Financial and Promotional Institution (SFPI) was among the first microfinance institutions in Ethiopia. SFPI remains one of only seven independent, privately owned MFIs in the country. SFPI has been operationally self-sustainable since 2004 and is poised to grow many times its current size.

SFPI’s mission is to “facilitate socio-economic empowerment of under privileged people, especially women in rural and urban Ethiopia.” by providing access to support services like credit, savings and business training.

Outreach:

SFPI targets the active poor through five branches in and around the capital city of Addis Ababa, as well as six sub-branches outside of the city. SFPI is actively expanding its services to the rural poor, increasing rural lending by 33.6% in 2006. SFPI plans to expand in the near future to include both the marginalized youth as well as those affected by HIV/AIDS.

Grameen Foundation support:

GF will provide additional capacity building and training for SFPI employees and Board of Directors in the area of governance, risk management, succession planning, and organization management, among others. As a long term goal, GF/Capital Markets will assist SPFI in securing commercial financing with local Ethiopian banks.
