Salvatore J. Pappalardo, Chief Operating Officer
Mr. Pappalardo joined the Grameen Foundation in 2007 as COO. A senior executive with over 25 years of private and public sector experience in financial services and international development, Mr. Pappalardo manages day-to-day operations of GF and also serves as a board director of Grameen Jameel Pan Arab Microfinance Ltd.
Mr. Pappalardo previously served as Managing Director of Financial Services Volunteer Corps, a not-for-profit, public-private partnership chaired by Paul Volcker and John Whitehead. He was responsible for global program activity that supported the building of sound financial systems in emerging markets. Managing FSVC offices and client relationships in Central/Eastern Europe, MENA and Asia, he led financial sector assessment missions and worked to strengthen the relationship between banks and SMEs and supported work to implement Basle II guidelines at central banks and regulatory institutions.
Earlier work includes the U.S. Treasury Department’s Office of Technical Assistance, where he served as an advisor to Poland’s Minister of Finance and officials leading commercial debt negotiations, which resulted in 50% debt/debt service reduction. He also helped develop local government debt markets in Poland, Croatia and Slovenia. During his banking career at Manufacturers Hanover Trust Co., Mr. Pappalardo held senior business development and credit risk positions. As Vice President of Sovereign Risk, he represented the bank during complex Brady Bond negotiations. He also had successive tours of duty as MHT co Representative in Kenya and Malaysia covering financial institutions and corporate clients.
Mr. Pappalardo holds an MBA from Thunderbird School of Global Management and a BA from St. Lawrence University.
